What is Helvetica Rounded?

I have a habit of occasionally getting quite angry and ranting about small things so I wanted to materialise this into some kind of list, mainly for my sanity. If I’ve written it down I can let my mind forget about it. Psychologically this is important for me. So what makes this blog different? Probably nothing, and I don’t want it to be different. However there is a little edge I do have. I have made myself have one rule, and this rule is, every time I publish a new hate I have to publish a love, and of course vice versa. This way I can smile thinking that yes something is truly crap but there is something else making up for it. This is actually quite similar to an event organised by and for the staff at the Brand Union. Every so often they will meet up and discuss things they love and things they hate, a debate if you like. And this brings us round to the name.

Why Helvetica Rounded?

Ah now this is easy! I didn’t want to call this Love & Hate and I was chatting to a good friend of mine, and we were discussing possible names for this blog. Perhaps Thea & Vole, but I got to thinking that may infact be more naff than Love & Hate. At which point Dan, my good friend whom I was discussing this with, said to me, what about using two things you love and hate together, like Chocolate & Rape. As tempting as it was to use that title, I had an idea. Helvetica&Rounded, which really should be Helvetica & Helvetica Rounded. I love Helvetica, it’s clean and beautiful and standard and it’s just right, it’s not the best but it is good. I hate Helvetica Rounded, it’s exactly the opposite of Helvetica, it’s got rid of everything that’s made Helvetica good and bastardised it, you can’t round Helvetica, that would be like making Univers Rounded or Arial Serif. Or something. Anyway I digress… When I worked at the Brand Union I went to one of those love and hate meetings and brought along a postcard I had made, which is a pun about Helvetica Rounded.
